How do I take my cat to the USA from the UK?
atlantica asked:
We are moving from the UK to the USA and need to take our pet cat. Has anyone else done this? Do you need certificates, vaccinations etc? I’ve looked up booking the cat onto the plane, which seems straightforward, it’s the immigration type stuff I’m worried about! Thanks.

I would go to the vet at least 6 mos out and make sure that the cat has all of its vaccinations and micro chipping prior. It is easier to move to the US from the UK, UK is rabies free. there is no quarantine period.
I would check the USDA vet web sites on line, or the national vet office for the UK.

And make sure that the airline your going to use has pressurized cargo areas! Some of them don’t and the flight would kill the cat.

Yes , you will need the vaccinations and veterinary certificates . You will need to buy an approved crate for your cat to travel in . My daughter has done it for her dog . Ask your vets or a good quarantine kennels , I recall the latter are well informed on all the requirements and may sell you the crate . You book the flight via Heathrow cargo ; on the appointed day you take your cat with paperwork , crate , food a dish , water , to heathrow cargo . The men working there are ever so kind . You may need to ask friends to take your cat to heathrow as you will be at the meeting end . Two young girls accompanied me to Heathrow , with my daughter’s dog . When we handed her over , they were both in floods of tears . The man who received us was so kind , comforting , assuring that the dog would be alright and well looked after .

you need to get a passport and have your cat microchipped, its quite a long drawn out process though.

Yes, I did this in 1997. Contact DEFRA, and get all the information about travelling with your cat. She will need rabies shots, and a veterinary certificate that she is free of parasites.
The people who arrange animal transport abroad will also be able to advise you. My cats went with a company called Worldwide Travel, but there are several available.
